Access to Information

This outside event discussed the targeting of blacks and other minority groups when it comes to political propaganda. The speaker discussed how outside groups try to suppress black voters by using fake information. Historically, black voters vote democratic and can have a tremendous influence on the election when they vote. However, there are many conservative groups on social media that have led campaigns to try to suppress black voters by giving them false information. On the outside these groups appear to be groups that are in support of blacks rights and appear to be looking out for people of minorites, but in reality they are false information campaigns. An example that the speaker provided of this was a political cartoon that said black people should not vote at all if the candidate does not support reparations. In reality reparations are not feasible and are completely out of the question. This particular group made this cartoon to discourage black people from voting.

This reading can be connected to the readings done in class about digital redlining. This reading showed that many times people who go to community colleges or colleges with less funding often have a lack of access to information. Many of the people of color who go to college go to community colleges. This shows that people of color are at a disadvantage when it comes to access to information. The speaker showed that black people are targeted by false information campaigns. With being targeted with false information and not having as much access to information people of color are at a great disadvantage.

The major takeaway that I got from this speaker was that we all have to be very careful about how we us the internet. We also have to be careful about all the information we see on social media because it could be a false information campaign. People need to double and triple check information to make sure it is reliable.
