The digital humanities are a great resource for people who have access to them. This however is a major problem when it comes to the digital humanities. Not very many schools have access to the digital humanities. These schools either do not have monetary resources to support these programs or they do not have trained faculty to teach these programs. This puts universities with smaller budgets at a disadvantage when compared to larger universities. We have read in class that community colleges are already at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing data when compared to traditional colleges, and not having the funds to utilize the digital humanities further puts these students at a disadvantage. We also read that many of the students that make up community colleges are people of racial minorities or people of low income. These groups of people are already at social disadvantages, so we should not put them also at educational disadvantages.
This being said however, I do not believe that the institutions that have the funding for the digital humanities should stop teaching just because of the educational disadvantages that they play into. I believe that the digital humanities are becoming more and more important as technology becomes more of a part of society. It is important for the students who attend universities that have the digital humanities to be involved and taught these courses, and just because some people do not have the resources does not mean that they should be kept from utilizing this resource. I could also see that if the digital humanities become more popular in large universities and in society, then they might become more important for smaller colleges and community colleges.
